Biotin Deficiency May Cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Biotin deficiency may cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Researchers hypothesize that biotin deficiency may be a cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). They base their theory on studies in chicks that demonstrate biotin deficiency leading to fatal hypoglycemia caused by deficient biotin-dependent enzyme activity. Corroborating evidence from results of autopsies shows that biotin levels in the livers of SIDS victims are far lower than infants who died of other causes.18
